DAFT’s Annual Media Teacher Symposium

The Media Teacher Symposium

DAFT's unique Media Teacher Symposium held at the Motion Picture Institute in Troy each year since 2012 offers a full-day of hands-on workshops and networking for elementary, secondary and college instructors of all subjects matter with a focus on one of DAFT's benchmark goals, media literacy.

Few districts in the state have their own media production facilities and curricula but most have some level of instruction or extra-curricular options for students--whether it's the morning announcements, sporting events and concerts or film classes.

At the 2011 Michigan Student Film Festival, many teachers and students were chatting after the awards wishing their were opportunities for these few media programs and instructors to share their lessons, best practices and curricula. And if continuing-education credit hours could be a part of the day all the better!

The following December the first symposium occurred at MPI as 10 media professionals and teachers worked throughout the day on making school programs as "real world" as possible.

Since 2012, this amazing day has continued to grow and now offers...

  • 5.5 Continuing Credit Hours (with the state of Michigan/Oakland County)
  • 20) workshops available in 4 separate blocks (75 minutes each)
  • Keynote Speakers
  • Media pros and Subject-Matter Expert teachers
  • Networking lunch (provided with admission)
  • Free admission for DAFT school membership
