Houston, TX – September 2, 2008 - The Young Minds Digital Times Film Competition is pleased to announce the opening of its call for entries. The first annual global competition is free to all student filmmakers from grades 6-12, to submit entries such as short films, documentaries, music videos or public service announcements for professional review. Winners in each of the two grand prize categories will receive trips for two to the prestigious South By Southwest Film and Interactive Festival March 13 – 17, 2009. The competition is a co-sponsored collaboration between OneSeventeen Media and Manor New Tech High School.

The deadline for registration is October 17, 2008 and the final entry submission deadline is December 19,2008. Submissions can be entered at www.youngmindsdigitaltimes.com.

Eighteen finalists will be awarded prizes in two major tracks and eight categories with the winners announced on or before February 13, 2009. Additionally, there will be Judges Choice Awards for categories such as Most Creative and Most Innovative Problem Solving.

“We want to offer this innovative competition because students have asked us to give them venues to share their ideas, showcase their work, and solve real-life issues,” said competition co-founder Amy Looper, OneSeventeen Media. “Additionally, kids want to promote social good, so we’ve created a unique track for them to be able to select a non-profit group or social cause. This allows them to do more good for others with their digital talent and skills. Kids have a lot to say, ideas to share, and frequently wonder why adults don’t get that about them! We expect this competition to eventually become as valuable to our creative young people in the same wonderful way Dean Kamen has done for math and science through his robotic competition, FIRST,” Ms. Looper concluded.
