Out of Video Project Ideas for Your Students?

Thanks to Kara Clayton of Thurston High School of South Redford schools who sent this along...

We just concluded the judging for the 18th annual THTV Academy Awards last night.  Although all of the judges agree that the production quality of the videos has improved over the years, the level of creativity/story development is just not there anymore.  I think a lot of it is that students look at Youtube and just copy ideas, calling it their own.  And, after 19 years of teaching, I think I am running out of ideas as well.
Is anyone else in the same boat?  Would it be possible to convene a group to brainstorm/share video ideas with other teachers either through an online forum, or as a session at an upcoming workshop?
So, after our great Media Teachers Symposium on February 28th, we're going to start our first blog-discussion going!

I did get a couple of suggestions about doing something similar to a 48 hour film festival where students draw three objects out of a hat and also a genre. I would love to brainstorm about this as well. Rubrics? What genres work well? What objects? How is 48 hours restructured in a one or two hour class period meeting 5 days per week?

Being “inspired by” and outright copying are points on a spectrum, so helping students define that line is critical. At the outset of acquiring a new skill students learn a lot by replicating what they have seen and while this has real value by the time the 6th zombie movie in a semester shows up a teacher might despair. Coming up with something new is tough when there is so much media out there already and trying a new idea can feel a bit dangerous. Even Hollywood execs prefer the comfort of what’s been done before.
One of my favorite tasks to spur unique story ideas is to ask the students to write a story that “wasn’t funny then, but it is now.” This really compels them to look into their personal stash of memories and sometimes the stories they find there are hilarious. And just like any story based on a real event, the video version gets to have snappier comebacks, funnier images and even special effects, but it is still an original.

Thanks Linda: Some great suggestions there for sure. Obviously meat eaters would eat foods with the best sources of choline with eggs and beef. Vegans and vegetarians need to be aware of the extra calories they will get if opting for nuts as their source of

Ele entrou em um dos redutos frequentados pela turma, encontrou um deles cercado de mulheres bonitas e disparou: “Você é um porco jogado às pérolas”.
